Trading Is a Game of Survival First
New traders often focus entirely on finding the 'perfect' entry signal. Experienced traders focus on something less exciting but far more important: staying in the game long enough for their edge to play out. If you run out of money, it doesn't matter how good your analysis was.
Risk management is the set of rules that decide how much you can lose on any single trade, and over any string of trades, so a few bad decisions never wipe you out.

The Math of Losses Is Not Symmetric
Losses and gains needed to recover from them are not equal. If your account falls by 20%, you don't need a 20% gain to get back to even — you need 25%. If it falls by 50%, you need a 100% gain just to break even.
This asymmetry is why avoiding large losses is more valuable than squeezing out large wins. Small, controlled losses are easy to recover from; large ones can take an account out of action entirely.
**Recovering From a Drawdown:** An account drops from $10,000 to $8,000, a 20% loss. To get back to $10,000, the account needs to grow from $8,000 by $2,000, which is a 25% gain ($2,000 / $8,000 = 25%). The deeper the hole, the harder the climb out.

What a Risk Plan Actually Controls
A solid risk plan typically covers four things: how much of your account you risk per trade, where your stop-loss goes, how large your position size should be, and how you react after a losing streak.
None of these guarantee profits. No risk management technique can turn a bad strategy into a winning one — its job is to make sure that losses, when they happen, stay small and survivable.
