Why a journal matters more than memory

Traders tend to remember big wins and big losses vividly while forgetting the many small, routine trades in between — this creates a distorted sense of how a strategy is actually performing. A trading journal replaces that distorted memory with an objective record.

Metrics beyond win rate

Win rate alone is incomplete — a strategy can win 70% of the time and still lose money if losses are much larger than wins. Average win size, average loss size, and the reward-to-risk ratio should be tracked alongside win rate.

Qualitative notes matter too

Beyond the numbers, noting emotional state and rule adherence for each trade helps separate strategy problems from execution problems. If most losing trades also broke a written rule, the lesson is about discipline, not about the strategy's logic.

Reviewing the journal periodically — not after every single trade — avoids overreacting to short-term variance that is normal even for a genuinely profitable strategy.

Journals don't predict the future

Just like backtests, journal statistics describe what already happened. A strong historical record from journaling increases confidence in a process, but market conditions can shift, and no journal can guarantee the next 50 trades will resemble the last 50.

The real value of a journal is in catching problems early and guiding deliberate improvement, not in forecasting exact future returns.
