A strategy is a decision-making system, not a signal
Many new traders think a 'strategy' is a single indicator or a chart pattern they saw work once. In reality, a strategy is a complete decision-making system: it tells you what markets to watch, when to enter, where to exit, and how much to risk, in a way that can be applied the same way every time.
If two different people using your strategy on the same chart would make two different trades, it isn't a strategy yet — it's a preference.

The five core components
Missing any one of these turns a strategy back into guesswork, because the trader has to improvise under pressure — exactly when judgment is weakest.

Repeatable beats clever
A mediocre strategy applied consistently will usually outperform a brilliant one applied inconsistently, because consistency is what lets you actually measure results and improve.
Strategies don't need to be complex. Many professional systems use a handful of simple, well-defined rules — the edge comes from disciplined execution, not complexity.

Where edge actually comes from
An 'edge' simply means your strategy's wins, over many trades, are expected to outweigh its losses after costs. It doesn't mean every trade wins — it means the math works out favorably over a large sample.
This is why later lessons on backtesting and expectancy matter so much: a strategy only deserves real money once there is evidence, not just a hunch, that it has an edge.
